TITLE:                      Speech, Language, and Hearing Therapist

 

QUALIFICATIONS:   In accordance with requirements of the Louisiana State Department

                                of Education

                                       

REPORTS TO:           Administrator of Special Education

                                                                                

SUPERVISES:           None

 

JOB GOAL:               To identify children with speech, language and hearing problems

                                which warrant some type of appropriate rehabilitative speech,

                                language and hearing therapy.

 

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

        ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES:

 

  1. Identify children with speech, language, and hearing problems which warrant some type of appropriate rehabilitative speech, language, and/or hearing therapy.
  2. Provide a thorough assessment and diagnosis of speech, voice, language, and hearing impairments.
  3. Provide a therapeutic individualized education program (IEP) to meet the needs of speech, language, and hearing handicapped children.
  4. Consult with parents concerning the nature and severity of the communicative handicapped and will request assistance in carryover of therapy goals and techniques in the home.
  5. Provide individualized and group speech, language and hearing therapy on a weekly basis.
  6. Incorporate teacher consultations in their program throughout the year to insure appropriate classroom management of speech, language and/or hearing problems.
  7. Serve as a resource to school staff members in the development of a balanced program for oral communication and speech improvement.
  8. Assist and guide teachers in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified speech, language, and hearing impairments.
  9. Provide, at regular intervals and at specified levels, screening to identify speech, language, and hearing handicapped children.
  10. Assist in proper referrals of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community.
  11. Conduct a minimum of at least two (2) faculty meetings at their respective schools and serve as consultants to faculty studies.
  12. Attend monthly administrative staff meetings.
  13. Willingly assume additional duties that may, from time to time, be assigned by the Administrator of the Speech, Language and Hearing Program.

 

        MANAGERIAL DUTIES:

 

  1. Keep thorough ongoing records for the individual student receiving therapy or other school provided speech services.
  2. Keep a weekly planned guide of anticipated therapy activities.
  3. Maintain lists of referred, screened, and eligible students, as well as a directory of outside agencies, consultants, specialists, and related services.
  4. Complete an accurate child count report in the month of December.
  5. Execute all policies of St. Landry Parish School Board and the St. Landry Parish Pupil Appraisal Center as directed by respective handbooks and memos.

 

        PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Attend in-service workshops as requested by local agency.
  2. Participate in self-developmental activities, such as, active membership in professional organizations, attendance at professional meetings, attendance at workshops at conventions, etc., whenever possible.
  3. Promote professional growth by the sharing of ideas and materials with other staff members.
  4. Keep abreast of new trends and techniques in the areas of speech pathology, language and audiology.
  5. Work in professional harmony with staff members, school administrators and teachers.

 

        PUBLIC RELATIONS:

 

  1. Attempt to promote positive ideas and concepts to school personnel and parents relative to the goals and purposes of the speech, language and hearing program.
  2. Meet with school personnel and parents for educationally related purposes when required or requested.
  3. Provide information to various social, civic, and business organizations throughout St. Landry Parish in an effort to develop a better awareness of the Speech, Language and Hearing Program.

 

 

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:     Nine (9) months

 

 

ACCOUNTABILITY:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the board’s policy on Evaluation of Personnel.

The Superintendent reserves the right to review, revise, update or change the job and any/all duties due to changes in job content, organizational structure, or state or federal laws.
